Exploring the Wonders of Egypt

We were up bright and early Monday morning to begin our tour of Giza. We had the same driver as we did for the Nile Dinner Cruise, Yahya, who is quite the riot. We drove us out to a small town where we were offered camel and horse tours of the area. Sara and I looked at each other and with one quick, "you only live once" we were off on our camels to explore the amazing wonders. Many people say the camel rides are a scam, but so far, its our favorite part of the trip. We rode them 14 kilometers through the desert and had a very entertaining guide explain all the history.

This is my camel, who I properly named Grumpy. He was quite the fussy fellow, and never wanted to stand up or sit down. In fact, he threw the reins off his head a couple times. I thought he was going to run off into the desert with me. But alas, he ended up behaving himself and we had a grand time.

The whole experience was completely surreal. We trekked through the Sahara Desert to explore one of the most famous marvels of the world. I won't bore you with historical facts that you can google, but the pyramids are truly breathtaking. Its crazy how these ancient man-made "mountains" are RIGHT on the edge of the city. And its true when they say that pictures don't do them justice. They are HUGE! Can you see Sara very tiny down at the bottom? And that's not even the biggest one!

Our tour guide got crafty with the photography and we got some awesome shots. We had a lot of fun with him and vice versa. He liked that we were a bit crazy and wanted to take lots of pictures!

Then it was just a little further to the Sphinx, which was carved out of 1 single stone. This is apparently the popular picture to take there. Ooooh lala!!

After Giza, we rode our camels through small towns full of horse stables, on the highway (terrifying, let me tell you) and to the papyrus museum. We explored the old capital of Egypt, Memphis, for a bit and called it a day.
We will go to dinner tonight and then up early tomorrow to catch a bus to Alexandria. There is just so much to see in 4 short days!

We had so much fun with him, and each other, and are so ecstatic to have been given such an amazing opportunity.
